While it does not have the same array of luxury features as TomTom's GO 720 or GO 920 line, the ONE XL-S offers all the features you need in a solid navigation system (see a feature comparison for all of TomTom's GO and ONE devices).

But it's not just the broad geographical coverage that makes the TomTom ONE XL-S special. The user-friendly design also puts it a step above other navigation systems. The crystal-clear multicolor display makes for exceptionally easy viewing of maps, routes, driving directions, and other traveling information, such as mileage and distance. Measuring 4.3 inches, the TFT display offers an expanded widescreen view of brilliant two- and three-dimensional graphics.

The device also features 32 MB RAM and 266 MHz CPU, making it responsive and zippy. Using the USB port and the provided cable, you can use your PC to add your own points of interest. Memory expansion is made possible by an SD card slot.

The ONE XL-S provides clear and accurate turn-by-turn voice instructions, so that you don't have to take your eyes off the road while your vehicle is on the move. Voice instructions are issued at a speed-sensitive volume, so as your vehicle's engine becomes louder or quieter as your speed changes, the volume adjusts itself accordingly, guaranteeing clear and easy listening. And because voice instructions are available in over 30 languages, just about anyone will find the TomTom ONE XL-S to be an invaluable system.

With its touch-sensitive screen, the TomTom ONE XL-S puts programming and operation literally at your fingertips to make sophisticated technology simple. The built-in database offers thousands of points of interest for you to use as destinations or reference points as you plan your trip. The ONE XL-S will also provide a selection of available routes, giving you the option of avoiding toll roads or choosing between the quickest or the most scenic routes. The database includes zip codes to simplify your route selection, and for extra convenience, the ONE XL-S lets you save the addresses of frequent destinations, making route planning easier and faster than ever. The 4.3-inch (diagonal) 3D driving view offers a clear picture of the road and maneuvers ahead (actual size).

For additional navigational features to assist with trip planning, the built-in Bluetooth connection provides access to TomTom PLUS subscription-based services, so that you can tune in to the latest traffic and weather conditions, as well as download additional city maps, voices, points of interest, and much more. The ONE XL-S adds to these capabilities with FM radio-based RDS-TMC traffic information as an available accessory (not included).

Weighing less than 10 ounces and measuring 3.4 x 4.7 x 1.2 inches, the TomTom ONE XL-S can be easily installed in any vehicle. An included windshield suction mount holds it in place. Plus, with an operating temperature range of an icy -10 degrees to a sweltering 55 degrees Celsius (14 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit), the navigator is durable enough for New England winters or Arizona summers. « It's an adventure with Tom Tom »

I drive through a complex intersection and this thing recaculates and I'm lost for 20 seconds.
Although I have shortest route programmed into the unit, I'm always directed to a major toll road like the NJ Turnpike or NJ Parkway.
And believe it or not I was once directed down a dirt road with deep mud puddles in my white Mercedes and unitl I sold the car if you got the light a certain way in the paint you could still see the stain.
I use to be a private pilot and all the navigation equipment was by Garman so I'll probably buy that brand, but please don't waste your money on a Tom Tom.

« Pricey Map Updates! »

I'll start right out with the "ugly". It costs $72 to update the maps (gives you 18 months of update service). We needed to update due to a new area we were in that wasn't on the pre-loaded map set. You also cannot "pan" on the map which is useful if you are using it as map. It also takes FOREVER to load the mapset. Like 15 minutes during which you get very little feedback and it looks like the program crashed. But give it time and it will eventually load. Tom Tom has units that come with lifetime maps so get those instead. Some of them are in the $150 range.

Overall a really nice GPS unit and MUCH better than our factory unit in our '03 Expedition.

« Customer service is terrible!! »

We had this product for less than a year and it completely stopped working. It would restart as if you were using it for the first time and make you go through all the settings. I would get to voice setting, choose, and then it would restart and go through the whole process again. I could never get further than that. By the time I contacted Tom Tom customer service, it had been a year and a month and they refused to do anything to help us. I will never buy any Tom Tom products again and would recommend no one buy this or any other Tom Tom product.

In October 2009 we left the wilds of Oklahoma to visit the Eastern Shore of Maryland. It rained every day for ten days. Before our trip, we purchased a Tom-Tom and we are so glad we did. There were no arguments during the trip which invariably happens when paper maps are in use. One person is the driver and the other person is the navigator and the navigator can never seem to communicate quickly or clearly enough to the driver which way to go. (Plus just the rattling and folding of the maps can be maddening!) Mounting the Tom-Tom on the windshield worked best for us. Rather than glancing down at the dashboard, the driver could just glance sideways at the Tom-Tom while keeping his eyes on the road. Remember to update your Tom-Tom driving directions before you leave on your trip. And regarding paper maps - we still used them. We studied them at home before we left to familiarize ourselves with the route and we did take them in the van . . . we just never took them out of the glove compartment!

« No turn on needed »

I bought this unit in 2009.. I turns on by itself!..called Tom Tom..Send it back, a complicated procedure.This I did..Returned a One Xl, not a One XLS. Go thru the whole procedure again.. Can't return quickly, as must be evaluated!.Geez, evaluate THEIR shipping error! Returned again, same problem..Returned again unit comes back and does the same thing, Auto turn-on. Item has been sent to Tom Tom Lab in Texas..And returning the same unit. I suggested the switch is bad, but what do I know? The customer service folk are very polite but do nothing, in this case. I will try again, maybe attempt to go to someone's supervisor this time!
