hdmi audio went out completely during the break from 5.1 sound to stereo of a commercial. Just pop and gone...no more audio over hdmi. Only used it two months too. Should definitely be built better i would think. Guess its warranty service for me now...what a pain.

« Top Notch AVR for the money »
I installed this receiver several weeks ago and I am very happy with it's performance and capabilities. Lot's of features and excellent sound and video qualities. Consulting the manual is essential. Pioneer customer service is helpful but not very competent. The Auto MCACC system made setting up my surround system very easy. So far I love this product from Pioneer and I got a very good price for it from Amazon ($548).

    *** Updated information ***

I still give this receiver 5 stars across the board. we since set the front speakers to large instead of small and found that it does improve the sound in the upper bass and midrange giving it more warmth. It is definitely a fuller sound.

I wanted to find an on line manual for the VSX-9040TXH so looked at the Pioneer site but didn't find it. I sent a request to them for information on where to get it and it took about a week before I got a response which was totally useless giving me no information at all and basically saying that they were glad to have helped me. Helped me with what? I'm not downgrading my evaluation of the receiver based on the lack of support because I am extremely pleased with it. I just wish Pioneer had been more helpful and here is why.

I decided to do a Google search for the manual and found it on the Canadian Pioneer website at the following location in case anyone needs it.

    [...]

Why couldn't Pioneer have given me that information?

You can still buy this receiver from the US Pioneer web site for $699 if you are interested.

    *** End Update ***

I spent weeks checking out various brands and models including offerings from Onkyo, Denon and Yamaha. I of course read reviews of many different AV receivers and kept coming back to this one. For the money it has what we wanted and needed and much more some of which we may never use but I felt it was better to take the options now rather than to regret it later. We recently upgraded our entire home entertainment system with a new flat screen TV and flat screen base. All of the older AV equipment was around 10 years old and had no HDMI ports at all so connectivity options were limited to say the least. We also added a new blu ray player to complicate matters even more. A new receiver was a must buy.

When we first got it all set up and began listening to a a variety of music including MP3's and cable radio we were astounded at the difference in the overall quality of sound. Everything was much clearer and cleaner then ever before. We are still using our original Bose 5.1 speaker system and we added a Boston Acoustics powered sub about a year ago. Watching and listening to blu ray movies is truly a whole new awesome experience. We have used the ability to stream movies from Netflix through our blu ray player from Panasonic and it all worked great.

We've only been using the new receiver for a short time now and are still learning all of it's features and capabilities and we may tweak a few things as we go along but all in all it all just worked great right out of the box once we assigned all of the components and ran the speaker calabration. Like some other reviews we found that the unit wanted to class the front speakers as large and we switched them to small since they are truly small satalites. We may actually try setting the front speakers to large though since the Bose system has a bass module as part of the 5.1 system. It isn't classed as a sub so really doesn't do much for the deep lows but definitely contributes to the upper bass and lower midrange so I may do some experimenting with the speaker settings for the front trying them set to large and small which they are now.

The unit has plenty of power and when coupled with the powered sub we probably manage to entertain the neighbors in our apartment building.

I highly recommend this receiver both in and somewhat above it's price range. It is becoming difficult to find at a discounted price but even if you bought it directly from the Pioneer web site at the suggested price it would be worth it. Last time I checked it was still available there.

« Spectacular Home Theater receiver for the money »
This product is a little misleading, because most online searches for it relate to Canadian forums and it is not listed directly on the Pioneer USA website (you have to search for the model number on their site). From all my research, this has all the same internal components as a Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH without a glossy front panel and a 1 year instead of 2 year warranty, so it is basically rebadged so E-Tailors can sell it online.

The sound from the unit is great, even re-using speakers from a Logitech Z-5500e system (and they are THX certified). Paired with a Polk PSW505, the bass is crisp, clear, and reaches low levels. The receiver can use MCACC to auto calibrate the speakers based on where an individual will be sitting in the room, which is very handy for a baseline calibration to tweak.

    « Solid Investment »
I just received my Pioneer VSX-9040 and hooked it up to my new Energy Take Classic mini-speakers and ESW-V8 subwoofer. I'm very pleased with this receiver. It's going to take me some time to dial in the sound the way I want it. The microphone calibration worked well, but I'm still tweeking with the sound and getting accustomed to the sound options and remote. I did a lot of research before this purchase. This unit is a diamond in the rough and well worth the money.
