    « BOOT PROBLEM - CAN'T USE THE NETBOOK »
I could not even use the product. As soon as I tried to boot, it showed a bug and won't work.

All the solutions ask for a boot with a system disk to solve the problem.

Once it does not come with a boot disk I payed almost USD 500 for a deluxe paper weight on my desk.

    « It's good... »
Yeah it's pretty good.. but it doesn't last the 5 hours like the title says.. it lasts about 4 if you're lucky. The performance is okay, considering it's a Netbook and all. But the images look great, it's a pretty good price for a nice computer that you will use for traveling and such.

« Extreme portability for the business user, but needs tweaking for primetime »
From the point of view of a non-gaming business user, this little machine offers extreme portability and reasonable battery life with no serious performance compromises. As of mid-summer 2010, it was the best value I found in the "high-end" netbook category. As I will describe below, I was able to tune it up to serve as my primary machine.

My understanding is that major industry players have colluded to keep options meagre and performance limited for "high-end" netbooks. Unfortunately, this machine is no exception. It is burdened with various performance draining options out-of-the-box. I got significant performance gains with tweaks such as disabling visual effects (right click on desktop... personalize), bloatware bootup (command prompt... msconfig), and search indexing per various online forums. But the most egregious hog seems to be "Boot Booster," which has unnoticeable effect on boot speed but eats up 1.2 of your 2GB memory. Get a PC-savvy friend to help with your tuneup if you're uncomfortable with tasks like changing BIOS settings!

As many have suggested, I also set up "ReadyBoost" on an 8GB SDHC card (originally from my camera). This supposedly helps the machine avoid frequent reads on the harddrive, though I haven't noticed a huge difference even with many programs and browser windows open. Still, ReadyBoost is a quick and cheap way to juice up the machine, esp since there is no way to install more memory. The only potential gotcha there is having to format your SDHC card to NTFS first (if it's larger than 4GB) to fully use its capacity.

My last gripe is the highly reflective screen. If there's any hint of sun in your work environment, you'll see your face better than the contents of your work. I was able to find a protective anti-glare sticker from an eBay merchant in Hong Kong that essentially solves that issue.

I realize all of this may sound like a pain. But it is worth juicing up this machine to happily replace a clunker laptop on the road. It's so light, I have to check to make sure I have it in my bag sometimes! After five weeks of near-daily use, I give it four stars assuming performance tweaks and glare fix.

« Does everything required of it »
I've owned this netbook for more than half a year, and thus far am extremely satisfied with it.

I'm not much of a computer geek, so I won't try to get technical, but I'd like to note that while the 1201N performs some tasks very well and others at a snail-like rate, it fits in with my preferences and activities perfectly. I bought it for several purposes, and have not been disappointed in any of them:

    1. To be lightweight enough to carry easily to school and work
    2. Internet browsing
    3. Word processing
    4. Video-streaming (on Youtube, Netflix and Amazon's Video on Demand)
    5. World of Warcraft

Although the computer is noticeably slower than my decently togged-out desktop at tasks such as virus scans or new software installation, this is not generally an issue as long as I confine my activities to the ones listed above. Internet surfing and word processing are of course not a problem, and videos play as seamlessly as they do on the desktop. I usually have several processes going at the same time, including Google Chrome (with video running) and multiple instances of Wordpad and/or OpenOffice Writer, with no appreciable dent in performance.

For fellow WoW gamers: World of Warcraft runs surprisingly well. I had expected to perhaps be able to check mail and auctions on this machine while unable to access my desktop, but I've had no problems solo-questing, either. Dalaran kills my frame rate during peak hours, but that holds true for many laptops and older desktops as well. I haven't tried raiding yet -- I'm used to playing with a ton of add-ons on the desktop but am using only the default UI on the netbook -- but I think 10-mans should be doable; 25-mans, doubtful. I use minimum settings, of course, with 1024x768 resolution in windowed mode (so I can easily tab in and out), and the game runs fine.

I don't know why the computer is so sluggish with tasks like software installation but brisk when it comes to gaming and videos, but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth. *g*

The one big problem with the 1201N is, as numerous people have mentioned, the short battery life. It'll last for 4~5 hours if you don't over-exert it, but you can't push it much further than that. Since my classes last for 3 hours and I have opportunities to recharge before and after, that isn't an issue for me, but this probably isn't the computer you want to bring with you on long flights.

    « It's ok. »
I was excited at first. Loaded everything I had on here, 1000 songs, 2000 pictures, etc. Was working ok at first, now having a few problems after 3 months. When it's not plugged in and I'm only listening to music it freezes when I try and come back to do something. Recognizing the cursor or hidden taskbar is slow sometimes, HD video online is slow, mouse has suddenly become ultra-sensitive. Sound through speakers or headphones is now crackling. I'll have to send it to Asus, which will be a huge hassle.

Otherwise, good for basic computer usage. About 4 hours battery life, screen is crystal clear, light to carry. Not expecting this one to last very long, probably overpriced for what it is.
